Part 9: The Last Human Stranger
The Next Temptation
pgs. 459- 462
YES!! Great way to start off the new part. There were COOKIES! Who cares if they were stale? The are cookies! The way Zusak describes them makes them seem tasty. A layer of icing sugar, chewy mounds, YUM! Wow Rudy, how selfish. 'Anything else? Any milk?' Be happy you get cookies.
Ok, time to get serious. I was shocked when the mayor's wife said it was her library. I wonder if she is fond of Liesel because that is how she was/ is like her... I also was wondering when and how old her son was when he died. There are lots of mysteries in this lady...
The Cardplayer
pgs. 463- 464
Not much to say about this section, it is more about foreshadowing. Zucker seems like a very annoying, bold man who is way to sure of himself. I think that this character will be important to Hans whether it is a good important or a life saving important. Either way, I am not very fond of him.
The Snows of Stalingrad
pgs. 465- 471
Hmm.... It is nice to know that Rosa is kind of social and at least knows her neighbors. I can't believe that she not only knows her neighbors, but is sad when she hears the news that one of them died. I wonder how Frau Holtzapfel is taking this. It doesn't seem like she is really going to pay attention.
Blood was bleeding through, and in patches, the clouds were dirty, like footprints in melting snow.
pg. 470
Wow what a powerful sentence. I can picture a huge white canvas, with red paint, seeping through the thin canvas, with dirt splotches on it. It seems like such a morbid way to explain a sky, but it is a really cool visual.
The Ageless Brother
pgs. 472- 474
I wonder if Liesel still thinks of her brother or if she really even remembers him. It seems like Max took the place of him for a while, but now that they are both gone, there is an even bigger absence. And Rosa! She seems to really miss him. I am starting to see the connection between the two.
The Accident
pgs. 475-478
Wow! That was a brutally close one! How many times is Hans going to dodge Death? I wonder if Death is ok with this because of the special connection he watches with Hans and Liesel and now Rosa! Anyways, I wonder if Hans noticed his broken leg right away. More importantly, how long is it going to take for Liesel to notice?
