Part 7: The Complete Duden Dictionary and Thesaurus

Frau Holtzapfel's Offer

pgs.385-388

Poor Liesel... Nice for Mama but why didn't Liesel get a say in it? Frau Holtzapfel seems to be ok, but she treats Liesel the same as Mama does. I would like to point out that she seems really busy when she says 'Never mind the 'yes, Frau Holtzapfel' Just open the book. We don't have all day.' I like how she thanks Liesel and tells her it is a good story. It is nice that Liesel even added in a 'heil Hitler' at the end.

Back to the beginning of the chapter, I could just imagine how big the 'crater' was. It seems like this is only the beginning of a worser time. I wonder how much will be destroyed when Rudy dies. I love how Liesel says 'Looks like they ned to fertilize again.'

Her wrinkles were like slander. Her voice was akin to a beating with a stick.

pg. 385

This gives me a really good visual. I can just imagine her ugly wrinkles, the kind that look gross and feel like a slimy snake. I can just imagine her hard voice beating at everyone's ears and giving them a beating.

The Long Walk to Dachau

pgs. 389- 396

This chapter is really sad. I can't believe they would make the starving Jews walk all the way. I can't believe some Jews were sad that they didn't die and someone else did. I'm glad that Hans actually went up to help the poor old man that couldn't even stand. I would have done that too no matter what the punishment was.

They called him a Jew lover.

pg. 395

How sad. Not only do they see other humans suffering and decide not to help them, but the one man who does help them gets called a Jew lover. I'm sure that if a Jew had saved their life, they would have done the same  what would you have done?

Peace

pgs. 397- 398

NO!!!!!! He can't leave. What about Liesel? What about fighting Hitler? What about his weather reports? The awful pea soup? His book? His sketches? The swapping of nightmares? Being like Liesel's brother? Anything? I bet he will come back. An author doesn't just build up a character just to have them leave. Maybe he will fight Hitler. He has to see Liesel again. How will he survive? Schweigen. I hate schweigen.

At the Amper River, he says you've done enough. Well yeah... and they were willing to keep helping you, Max! You could still have that pea soup... still fight Hitler... get your weather reports. Max better have left for a purpose. I hope they come to check the house. I hope he left for a reason.

How perfect. Peace.

pg. 398

No. Not perfect. The descendent of the man who saved Hans just left. Yeah, maybe everything is perfect now, but was it really worth it? It isn't perfect. There is a huge punishment coming for Hans. He tried to save a Jew. It is not perfect. Peace? More like havoc. One less problem, but Hans still has about a million more. One, he tried to help a Jew. Two, he HAD a Jew living in his house. Three, he is not a Nazi. Four, he has three mouths to feed, not just him and his wife, but Liesel too. I wonder if it was all worth it...

The Idiot and the Coat Men

pgs. 399- 403

Idiot is just one of many words. Is Hans impulsive or is he just against Jews getting punished? Liesel is focused more on what I am focused on. Max. Will he survive? He has to. Back to Papa, I don't think he did anything wrong either. But he didn't really think either. A week had passed and still nothing. Are they waiting for the right time? Are they coming at all?

Finally they come... and they don't even go into their house. He is too old for their purposes? Why do they want Rudy? Is Rudy in trouble? I hope I can find out in the next section or for that fact, the next part.

The coat men stood like jacketed columns on the threshold of the Steiners' shoe-box house.

pg. 403

That is kind of cool. Jacketed columns standing at the bottom of the entrance. And a shoe-box house? That is kind of cool too. I can just see Frau Steiner being the little old woman who lived in the shoe. And she does have so many children and she rarely seems to know what to do...;)
